2017: August 25, 2017 - London to Whitstable

As we head towards autumn, it’s time once again to enjoy the Queen of Rides - destination Whitstable.

We’ll be starting at our new for 2017 start point - Fridays Central. This is located between the British Film Institute and the river Thames under Waterloo Bridge. From there we’ll escape London via the Cutty Sark, the Thames Path, and we may even be able to wave at those detained at Her Majesty’s Pleasure in HMP Belmarsh.

We leave the main roads at Plumstead, ducking under the Dartford Bridge and heading into the dark lanes just after Gravesend. From that point on, the ride becomes ever more dream-like. Refreshments are taken at the Church of the English Martyrs in Strood, before crossing the Medway and heading east towards our destination. The road from Faversham to Whitstable runs across the Graveney Marshes, a delight that you can take at your own speed. Breakfast will be at the Waterfront Club overlooking the sea, with views across to Southend-on-sea on a clear day. There’ll be a castle, a cathedral, possibly a submarine, and almost certainly sheep. It’s a ride of around 65 miles, lightly rolling in places, but with no serious hills and an excellent half way stop.

Just as a quick reminder:

Everyone needs to be a current member of The Fridays and to have paid their £2 subscription in advance, even if this is your first or only ride with The Fridays this year.

The rules around third party insurance have been relaxed and as a club we are happy to accept third party insurance cover supplied through the membership of Cycling UK (formerly CTC), British Cycling and London Cycling Campaign. If you are not a member of any of the above, by being a member of The Fridays you can become an affiliated member of Cycling UK at reduced cost to full membership and enjoy the majority of the benefits of full membership. If this is your first ever ride with The Fridays, then things are even easier as our Ride Insurance will provide you with third party cover as ‘try before you buy‘ for your first ride with us. After that, we would expect you to become a member of one of the organisations above but would prefer you of course to join Cycling UK. Full details are HERE.

Please ensure you have read the 'Basics' and other sections on the Fridays website e.g. Equipment, Lights & Signals, etc., for further advice.

See you on the road.

Ross (Whitstable ride leader)
