2017: June 2 - London to Shoreham-by-sea

After a lovely inaugural Bristol to Barry ride, the next ride on 2nd June sees the welcome return of Shoreham.

Starting at midnight from Waterloo Bridge on the Southbank in front of the British Film Institute (MAP HERE), we will then cross Westminster Bridge, salute the mother of parliaments, and then follow the Thames to Chelsea Bridge before turning south. After zooming through the delights of the Clapham & Tooting nightlife, we’ll emerge, blinking in the darkness, on Farthing Down but keep an eye out for the cattle with hi viz feet. We’ll then accompany the M23 towards our halfway stop, the Scout Hut in Burstow, where eager volunteers will be serving food & drink, so make sure you bring cash to help the Scouts carry on with their dibbing and dobbing.

Suitably refreshed, and with dawn on the horizon, we’ll head for Turners Hill which may please those who have lamented the lack of a Brighton ride. After a pause at the top, then we’re onto new roads, skirting south of Crawley and then zipping through sleepy hamlets and a cunning gap in the South Downs where you’ll be able to spot Lancing College, before we get clearance for our final descent to the stunning art deco destination of Shoreham Airport, and a magnificent buffet breakfast.

Afterwards, it’s only a mile to the station, where you can get trains to London (2 per hour direct plus 2 per hour changing at Brighton), both of which take around 1 hour 15 mins overall. Trains westbound towards Portsmouth run twice an hour. Southern rail don’t have any issues carrying bikes, and there aren’t any scheduled disruptions.

There are no really, really long steep hills on this ride, more rolling ups and downs with most of the climbing immediately before and after the halfway stop. And it’s downhill right at the end. 60 miles in total.

The sign-up form can be found here.

About 2 weeks before the ride, you’ll get an email with an update and then another one a few days before the ride.
