2017: September 1 - London to Felpham (Bognor Regis)

Friday 1st September is the return of another long time FNRttC favourite - Bognor (ok, technically Felpham).

Our starting point is on the South Bank, by the National Theatre Cafe located on the access road between the National Theatre and British Film Institute. Access is via Belvedere Road or Upper Ground.

Leaving South Bank at midnight, we'll skirt around the Houses of Parliament and follow the Thames, to then cross over Chelsea Bridge, and then head south west, with the call of the sea in our ears. After a traditional stop on Clapham Common (home to an omnibus and the odd MP), it's then a steady pace through the suburbs to break free from the M25 cordon and drop downhill to Dorking. We're then on rolling country lanes, listening to the night chorus before we emerge blinking onto the A264 at Faygate for our half way stop at the Cabin.

Once nourished on an ample supply of food, teas and coffees, we'll be off into the dawn, skirting around Horsham, and then possibly on a slightly different route from previous years towards Amberley, to then encounter the Gurkha bridge. (The undergrowth will have been cut back!)

We'll stop in Arundel to admire the castle, before then heading off for our breakfast stop.

Bognor station is less than a mile away, with frequent trains. (It's also a nice bike ride home.)

Total distance is 72 miles, and no long dragging hills.

Just as a quick reminder:

  • The rules around third party insurance have been relaxed and as a club we are happy to accept third party insurance cover supplied through the membership of Cycling UK (formerly CTC), British Cycling or London Cycling Campaign. If you are not a member of any of the above, by being a member of The Fridays you can become an Affiliate member of Cycling UK at reduced cost to full membership and still enjoy the majority of the benefits of full membership. If this is your first ever ride with The Fridays, then things are even easier as our Ride Insurance will provide you with third party cover as ‘try before you buy‘ for your first ride with us. After that, we would expect you to become a member of one of the organisations above but would prefer you of course to join Cycling UK. Full details are HERE.
